When I was 15 years old, I was given an application by the teacher of my Etiquette class to apply for the 'Miss Teen California' Pageant.
That teacher believed that I had what it took to win the Pageant.
By this time in my life, I had still not worn my first pair of high heels, and the idea of parading around in front of a room of strangers while I
was wearing high heels, scared me to death.  But, with my mother's encouragement, I sent in the application.  Much to my surprise, I made
it through to the local city Pageant, and then to the County.  And when I was invited to the State '
Miss Teen California' Pageant, I was
ecstatic!
It was at the meeting, before the State Pageant that my spirit died a little, one of the advisors, or directors told me that I would probably get
signed by a modeling agency if I "...lost 20 pounds, and lost the hair dye job."  I was crushed, then angry, I didn't consider myself to be fat,
and, my hair just happens to be naturally blond!
After that experience, I decided not to continue with Pageants, because I didn't want anyone telling me what I '
should' look like.
Now, I have a 3 year old daughter who has been in one pageant and fell in love with the whole concept.  So I decided that I wanted to have
a Pageant that I would have no issue entering my daughter in.  A Pageant where Beauty, Talent, Scholastic Achievement,Community
Service, and Leadership in one's community and school, were acknowledged.
With
Angels of Light Beauty Pageant, the young ladies competing will not have to wear $1500 dresses, or hair pieces and 'Glamour Shots'
make-up.  Our contestants will have an opportunity to showcase their talent, personality, style, and whatever else they would like to
showcase.
Many Pageants SAY that winners are chosen for "natural beauty" but when you see the Pageant winners they all look as though they just
walked off of the '
Miss America' stage!  Angels of Light Beauty Pageant will NEVER be a traditional Pageant!
It is my hope that after the first
Angels of Light Beauty Pageant, that we will have past winners judge, and coach new contestants, and that
participants will form connections/friendships with other contestants from different schools, and cities that they will maintain throughout
their lives.  I am hoping that we will also be able to hire our youth to work with other children, involving those who would not normally
enter a Pageant for ANY reason.
EVERY CHILD DESERVES TO BE TREATED LIKE ROYALTY, AND THAT IS OUR AIM, TO ENCOURAGE AND UPLIFT OUR YOUTH TO
GREAT HEIGHTS!

I thank you so very much for your interest and hope that you will consider becoming an
Angel of Light Beauty Pageant family member.

Sincerely,
Lakisha Dent-Gordon
Pageant Director
